Topic for discussion: Use of the terms Gauged, Gauges and Gauging
We at Zuki Imports, LLC do not use the terms "gauged", "gauges" or "gauging". We prefer to call it Large Gauge Jewelry for Stretched Piercings. While that may seem like a long name for something that could easily be shortened to something like gauges, we don't feel that is a correct use of the term. Gauge is a unit of measurement, just like an inch is a unit of measurement. If the plugs were 1 inch in diameter, would you call them "inches"? I think not. If your piercings were stretched to 1 inch, or you were currently stretching to that size, would you call it "inching or inched"? Again, I think not. Nobody says, "I have inched ears." So why do people say "I have gauged ears."?
If there's one thing that history and linguistics teach us, it's that all languages change over time. This may just be one small example where the American English language is in the process of changing. How long will it be until we see the word "Gauges" as a noun that specifically refers to jewelry as a word in the dictionary? Hmmm. Now that's food for thought.
